  48. IRON MAIDEN have been around in one form or another really since about 1975
  49. or so, and was one of the most definitive forces in the New Wave Of British
  50. Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) to come out into the world during the late 1970's and
  51. early 1980's.  With 9 true studio albums, 4 live full-length albums,
  52. 2 E.P.'s, 7 videos, countless singles, special releases, re-releases and 
  53. other goodies, one need not wonder why.
  54.  
  55. With about 18 years of history behind the band (which includes about 24
  56. different 'official' lineup changes), you wonder how they did it?  Powerful
  57. music, with powerful lyrics.  Always a heavy beat, and best played loud,
  58. loud, LOUD!  Though the band's popularity has probably already hit its
  59. maximum peak several years back (let's at least admit that), there are many
  60. thousands of us die-hard fans out there who have professed and pledged
  61. devotion!

  63. What follows in this FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) List is a huge mass of
  64. IRON MAIDEN-related information, developed pretty much for the use of people
  65. on alt.rock-n-roll.metal.ironmaiden.  (And just for your information,
  66. according to the Usenet readership report in October 1993, this group has an
  67. estimated readership of 24,000 people worldwide, and averages about 350+
  68. messages/month, as of recently!)  It answers many questions, but also
  69. provides a wealth of information about IRON MAIDEN's past and present.  A lot
  70. of time (you don't even want to know!) was spent just typing the information

  302. * Steve Harris left GYPSY'S KISS for SMILER...who knows.
  303. * Steve Harris left SMILER to form IRON MAIDEN - SMILER was stifling Steve
  304.   with its "tunnel vision" - no room to experiment...kinda "rockabilly"
  305.   versions of rock songs.  He left in end '75.
  306. * Terry Rance and Dave Sullivan were good at rhythm, but lacked in the 'lead'
  307.   department.  Murray came in, they kinda got the picture and said "either
  308.   him or us..."  They were dropped in late '76.  :)
  309. * Paul Day's voice was good, but lacked energy on stage.  So he was out in
  310.   mid '76. He played with More and Wildfire after leaving.
  311. * Bob Sawyer had been dropped earlier along the way (end of '76), because he
  312.   was always trying to upstage Dave Murray, instead of complementing his style.
  313.   He played with Praying Mantis afterwards.
  314. * Dave Murray lasted about 6 months (until early '77), before he and Den
  315.   Wilcock had a big argument at a Bridge House gig, Wilcock clocked him one,
  316.   and Dave Murray went off to join pal Adrian Smith's URCHIN.
  317. * Ron Matthews had decided to 'rebel' no longer :), and took off in early
  318.   '77. After his stint in Maiden he played with John McCoy and Bernie Torme.
  319. * Tony Moore was axed 'cos keyboards obviously didn't fit in with Maiden's
  320.   style (after 1 gig), in mid '77.
  321. * Terry Wapram insisted he could only work with an organist/keyboardist, so
  322.   that was the end of him too, in mid '77.
  323. * Den Wilcock decided he'd "had enough," right before a gig at the Green
  324.   Man Plumstead, England.  Mid '77.
  325. * Thunderstick quickly followed suit, with the band temporarily on ice.
  326. * Paul Cairns lasted under 3 months.  Left in mid '79.
  327. * Paul Todd lasted less than a week (2 days), 'cos his girlfriend didn't want
  328.   him to go on tour on the road.  (What a wuss).  Left in Oct '79.
  329. * Tony Parsons lasted about 10 weeks.  Left at end '79, 'cos he just wasn't
  330.   happy on stage...and wasn't a tremendous success on stage or anything.
  331. * Doug Sampson quit due to ill health upon touring.  Jan '80.
  332. * Dennis Stratton left the band to form Lionheart around Oct '80, at which
  333.   time rifts between he and the rest of the band were developing.  He had a
  334.   passion for 'classic rock' bands like the Eagles, was a good bit older
  335.   than the rest of the band, and problems with "the general attitude to
  336.   various aspects of the band" as well.  The split wasn't particularly
  337.   amicable at first (some name calling at first...Steve was said to have
  338.   rather sacked a band member than tolerate dissent...), but after a few 
  339.   months things worked out okay.
  340. * Paul Di'Anno left the band in September 1981.  According to sources, his
  341.   biggest problem was that he just didn't respect his most valuable asset:
  342.   his voice.  He smoked, he drank too much, and generally lived the rock 'n'
  343.   roll lifestyle to the fullest.  And naturally his singing suffered.  He
  344.   went on to several other projects, such as LONE WOLF, DI'ANNO, BATTLEZONE,
  345.   PRAYING MANTIS, KILLERS, etc.
  346. * Clive Burr left the band in December 1982, despite getting voted 3rd best
  347.   drummer in the world in a KERRANG poll (who was 1st and 2nd, I wonder?!).
  348.   Clive said he was leaving "for personal reasons" and that he intended to
  349.   quit the music business for good (although he has been around ever since
  350.   here and there - see the section in the FAQ on the MAIDEN "family tree").
  351.   He was also tired of the very hectic touring schedule.  It was an amicable
  352.   split and Clive got a special thanks and "good luck mate" on the PIECE OF
  353.   MIND album sleeve credits.
  354. * Adrian Smith left the band in January 1990 to pursue other things.  He also
  355.   was becoming more uncomfortable with his performance in Maiden, especially
  356.   when songs couldn't be played perfectly, or if the show went off with
  357.   little hitches here and there.  You gotta figure that he also wanted a
  358.   change of scenery, after a little more than 9 years in the band.  His next
  359.   musical project was A.S.A.P. (Adrian Smith and Project), and was quite a
  360.   bit different than his typical Maiden stuff.  It was a pretty amicable
  361.   split from what I understand.  He also made a guest appearance during
  362.   the closing song, Running Free, when Maiden headlined the Monsters of
  363.   Rock in August 1992.  This has been recorded on the Donington video and
  364.   the double CD/triple LP Donington Bootleg.
  365. * Bruce Dickinson left Maiden in September 1993, to pursue his solo career
  366.   and other projects, spend more time with his family, and to do other
  367.   things, like maybe another book, more fencing, and to take a break in
  368.   general.

  376. Dennis Wilcock - original lead vocalist (Nov 1976 - Mid 1977).  Left IRON
  377.    MAIDEN permanently to form V1 with Terry Wapram (also former guitarist
  378.    with IRON MAIDEN, Spring 1977).  Also sang for WARLOCK in early 1976.

  380. Dave Murray - more or less a co-founder of IRON MAIDEN with Steve Harris (Mid
  381.    1976 - Nov 1976, Spring 1977 - present).  Guitarist.  Was in a couple of
  382.    other bands previously:  EVIL WAYS (1972 - 1974), a school group along
  383.    with childhood friend Adrian Smith), URCHIN (early 1977, along with Adrian
  384.    Smith).  Also contributed to the HEAR'N AID project in 1986.

  386. Steve Harris - founder of IRON MAIDEN (Dec 1975 - present).  Bass guitarist
  387.    and back-up vocals.  Was in bands INFLUENCE (which turned into GYPSY'S
  388.    KISS) (1972 - 1973) and SMILER (1974-1975) previously.  Several GYPSY'S
  389.    KISS songs later became IRON MAIDEN songs, like "Burning Ambition" and
  390.    "Drifter."

  404.       LONE WOLF (1982 - ?) - not much around, but supposedly sounds like
  405.          watered-down WHITESNAKE.  This was a 6-piece band.
  406.       GOGMAGOG (1985) - NWOBHM supergroup, featuring Di'anno on vocals, Pete
  407.          Willis (DEF LEPPARD) and Jannick Gers (GILLAN) on guitars, Neil
  408.          Murray (WHITESNAKE) on bass guitar, and Clive Burr (IRON MAIDEN) on
  409.          drums.  Released in 1985 a demo E.P. "I Will Be There."
  410.       DI'ANNO (1984 - May 1985) - I don't know much about this band except it
  411.          sounds like JOURNEY.  Released an album Di'ANNO, as well as a single
  412.          from this album "Heartuser" b/w "Road Rat" in 1984, under the FM
  413.          Coast to Coast label (a division of Heavy Metal Records).  Also
  414.          released an album TWO SWIMMERS & A BAG OF JOCKIES in 1984 with Lee
  415.          Slater (Guitars, Vocals), P J Ward (Guitars, Vocals), Kevin Browne
  416.          (Bass, Vocals), Mark Venables (Keyboards), and Mark Stuart (Drums).
  417.          Mark Stuart left the band before recording, so Dave Irving played
  418.          drums on this album.  (I *think* this information is correct!)
  419.       PAUL DI'ANNO'S BATTLEZONE (1986 - 1987) - recorded in 1986 FIGHTING
  420.          BACK and in 1987 CHILDREN OF MADNESS.  Drummer on second album is
  421.          Steve Hopgood of famed NWOBHM band PERSIAN RISK.
  422.       "ALL-STAR" PROJECT (1989) - with Lea Heart back in '89.  The album was
  423.          recorded somewhere in the UK, and the participants were a Japanese
  424.          band around Tak Yonemochi, Paul Di'Anno, Dennis Stratton, some of
  425.          Saxon, etc. - about 15 - 20 people altogether.  The album seems to
  426.          have been produced for the Japanese market, so there is little
  427.          English text on the cover, mostly Japanese...  Either the band or
  428.          the album is called "Kaizoku".  Anybody have any more information?
  429.       PRAYING MANTIS & Paul Di'anno, Dennis Stratton (1990) - recorded on the
  430.          PRAYING MANTIS reunion in Japan LIVE AT LAST in 1990.  Other members
  431.          are Tino Troy and Chris Troy of PRAYING MANTIS and STRATUS, Dennis
  432.          Stratton of LIONHEART, and Bruce Bisland of Weapon and Statetrooper.
  433.       KILLERS (Jan 1992 - present) - featured Steve Hopgood on drums and Nick
  434.          Burr (Clive Burr's brother) on guitars.  Released MURDER ONE in
  435.          1992.

  437. Tony Parsons - first official 2nd lead guitarist for IRON MAIDEN (End of 1979
  438.    for 10 weeks).  Recorded "Sanctuary" and "Wrathchild" on the METAL FOR
  439.    MUTHAS compilation.

  441. Dennis Stratton - second official 2nd lead guitarist (Jan 1980 - Oct 1980).  
  442.    With IRON MAIDEN recorded on the IRON MAIDEN album, "Women In Uniform" EP,

  447.       LIONHEART (Oct 1980 - 1985) - first NWOBHM supergroup, with Jess Cox
  448.          (TYGERS OF PAN TANG) on vocals, Stratton on guitar, Steve Mann on
  449.          guitar, Rocky Newton on bass guitar, and Frank Noon (DEF LEPPARD,
  450.          soon to be in WAYSTED) on drums.  Though formed in 1980, never
  451.          recorded anything until 1985, an album HOT TONIGHT, then split.
  452.       All-Stars NWOBHM (1990) - all-star lineup which includes members and ex
  453.          members of FASTWAY, SAMSON, GIRLSCHOOL, IRON MAIDEN, PRAYING MANTIS,
  454.          WHITESNAKE, BLIZZARD OF OZZ, etc.  Recorded an album ALL-STARS
  455.          NWOBHM in 1990.
  456.       PRAYING MANTIS & Paul Di'anno, Dennis Stratton (1990) - played on their
  457.          reunion in Japan and in 1990 released LIVE AT LAST as lead guitarist
  458.          and co-lead vocalist with the Troy brothers and Paul Di'anno.
  459.       PRAYING MANTIS - after the reunion became their lead vocalist and
  460.          guitarist opposite Tino Troy.  Released album PREDATORS IN DISGUISE
  461.          in 1991.

  463. Clive Burr - 2nd drummer for IRON MAIDEN (Jan 1980 - Dec 1982).  Recorded on 
  464.    all that Dennis Stratton recorded with the band, KILLERS album, "Maiden
  465.    Japan" EP, and THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST album.

  467.    OTHER WORKS:
  468.       SAMSON (Early 1978 - 1979) - original drummer, played on first NWOBHM
  469.          single ever "Mr. Rock N Roll" with Chris Aylmer on bass and Paul
  470.          Samson on guitars and vocals.
  471.       CLIVE BURR'S ESCAPE (1983?) - Recorded a session for Radio 1 on the BBC
  472.          in the UK.  Anyone know anthing else about this one?
  473.       TYGON (formerly STRATUS) - With Tino and Chris Troy (in STRATUS).  The
  474.          brief name change to TYGON was abandoned after a little while, 'cos
  475.          they found several other things with that name.  So as of September
  476.          1984, they were STRATUS, and *might* have produced an album...I'm
  477.          not sure.  Anyone know anything else about this one?
  478.       PRAYING MANTIS (?) - one of their many drummers in their history.
  479.          Recorded "The Soundhouse Tapes Part II," and "Captured City" on
  480.          METAL FOR MUTHAS compilation.  Was very good friend of next PRAYING
  481.          MANTIS drummer Dave Potts.
  482.       TRUST (1983? - ?) - replaced Nicko McBrain on drums for one album but I
  483.          can't remember the name of it.  TRUST is regarded by many to be the
  484.          greatest French heavy metal band ever.
  485.       GOGMAGOG (Jun 1985 - ?) - drummer on "I Will Be There" EP.  That is all
  486.          the band recorded.
  487.       DESPERADOS (?) - formed by Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister fame.  Recorded
  488.          an album but it was never released.  None of the members have legal
  489.          access to any material on the album.
  490.       ELIXIR (?) - drummer on second album LETHAL POTION. As far as I know
  491.          he's still in ELIXIR.
  492.       TRUE BRITS (1992) - Releasd an album READY TO RUMBLE in 1992 with Lea
  493.          Hart (Vocals, Guitar), Dave Senczak (Guitar), Dennis Stratton
  494.          (Vocals, Guitar), and Mel Gagbbltas (Bass).  This might not actually
  495.          be a band.  I think they (Clive, Dennis, etc.) just joined the album
  496.          of Lea Hart (ex-FASTWAY).  There are many (36) names of special
  497.          guests on this album, for example, Scott Gorham, Neil Murray, Paul
  498.          Di'Anno, Eddie Clarke, Paul Samson, Gary Barden, Tino Troy, etc.

  500. Adrian Smith - guitarist for IRON MAIDEN (Oct 1980 - Jan 1990).  Dave
  501.    Murray's longtime friend and former guitarist of URCHIN, among many other
  502.    bands.  Played guitar on everything after Dennis Stratton left, and was
  503.    permanent member for more than 9 years.  His last recording with IRON
  504.    MAIDEN is the "Infinite Dreams" EP, recorded live on the Seventh Son Of A
  505.    Seventh Son World Tour, leaving a legacy of one song "Hooks In You" on the
  506.    next album NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING.

  509.       EVIL WAYS (1972 - 1974) - a school group with Dave Murray.

  516.       BROADWAY BRATS (Mid 1980 - Oct 1980) - along with Andy Barnett on
  517.          guitar, Jeb Million on vocals (formerly with BLAZER BLAZER), Steve
  518.          Wells on bass (also formerly with BLAZER BLAZER), and Ian Richardson
  519.          on drums (also formerly with BLAZER BLAZER).
  520.       A.S.A.P. (1990 - ?) - formed in 1989, featuring Zak Starkey, son of
  521.          Beatles drummer Ringo, on drums.  Recorded in 1989 SILVER AND GOLD
  522.          and an EP.  Changed their name (?) to the UNTOUCHABLES.  Andy
  523.          Barnett on guitars as well, Dave Colwell also on guitars, Robin
  524.          Clayton on bass, and Richard Young on keyboards as well.  Quite a
  525.          different sound that IRON MAIDEN!
  526.       UNTOUCHABLES (Aug 1992 - present) - his current band made up of half
  527.          the people in A.S.A.P. (there were a lot of members in A.S.A.P.).
  528.          We're still waiting for their release.  Gary Liederman on bass, Huey
  529.          Lucas on guitar, and Bob Richards on drums.

  531. Nicko McBrain - longtime friend of the band, Clive Burr's replacement (Dec
  532.    1982 - present).  Recorded everything from the beginning of the PIECE OF
  533.    MIND sessions and is still a member.  Member of French heavy metal group

  535.    many), among many other bands he was in.

  558.       SPEED (?) - recorded nothing - were a cross between the STRANGLERS and

  560.       SHOTS (1977 - 1979) - based on street theatrics, sounded more like Deep
  561.          Purple and Ian Gillan Band stuff as well as SPEED, but more hard
  562.          rock.  Also never recorded.
  563.       SAMSON (Jun 1979 - Aug 1981) - Recorded SURVIVORS (1979) for the band
  564.          but never released it.  Dickinson was on this album but as guitarist
  565.          and harmonica player.  He was a kind-of member at this time since he
  566.          said he didn't want to join the band until he graduated from
  567.          college, which by this time was only two weeks away).  A previous
  568.          version of SURVIVORS was already on the presses and so they wrote
  569.          HEAD ON, and then toured in support of the two albums.  Last album
  570.          with Bruce (aka Bruce Bruce) was SHOCK TACTICS, in 1981.  In 1990
  571.          Paul Samson released LIVE AT READING '81 with Dickinson.  During his
  572.          tenure with SAMSON, SAMSON were regarded the most popular, equalled
  573.          only by DEF LEPPARD, IRON MAIDEN, and SAXON.  Paul Samson continued
  574.          on with SAMSON with Nicky Moore (formerly with TIGER).  The first 3
  575.          albums also had former IRON MAIDEN drummer Thunderstick (Spring 1977
  576.          - Mid 1977).
  577.       OTHER PROJECT (1986?) - Appeared on "Lone Wolf", the B-side of XERO's
  578.          "Oh Baby" single.
  579.       MR. BEAN & SMEAR CAMPAIGN (1992) - Together with Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean)

  600.       THE EARTHQUAKE ALBUM / ROCK AID ARMENIA (1990) - This is a compilation
  601.          the sales of which went towards helping the people of Armenia stricken
  602.          by the 1990 earthquake. The first track is SMOKE ON THE WATER '90 and
  603.          is a sort of all-star performance of the classic DEEP PURPLE song.
  604.          Bruce sings the 2nd verse of the song. (This performance also features
  605.          names like Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Tony Iommi, Dave Gilmour,

  619.          Reading Festival 1981). Bernie Torme plays guitar on one of the live
  620.          tracks, "If You Believe Me", recorded earlier. Janick also appears on

  622.          Virgin, with some single b-sides and outtakes. When in GILLAN he used
  623.          to play a cover of BLACK NIGHT which he later did with Bruce Dickinson
  624.          and is now available on a Dickinson single. Gillan fell apart when
  625.          Ian Gillan thought there was going to be a DEEP PURPLE reunion. When
  626.          that didn't happen, Ian joined BLACK SABBATH, recording BORN AGAIN,
  627.          before the DEEP PURPLE reunion eventually happened in 1984.
  628.       DI'ANNO (Jan 1985 - May 1985) - With Frank Noon on drums, along with

  742. messages, one after the other.  Both are spoken by Nicko in a deep Rasta

  744. the first says "What ho sed de t'ing wid de t'ree bonce", which means "What 
  745. ho said the monster with the three heads" (from Idi Amin's book [which
  746. book?!]).  The second says "Don't meddle wid t'ings you don't understand."

  840. Memorial Stadium in Buffalo, NY.  A lawsuit stemmed from this concert where
  841. some girl was doing sensual dancing on stage.  I'm not sure of the outcome of
  842. this (somebody wanna check?!), but the original article reads like this:

  860.    Ms. Kolaga, a professional fashion model, won a local "Ms. Heavy Metal"
  861. contest, and because of that was invited onstage during the performance to
  862. crack a whip and dance around Dickenson.
  863.    The suit alleges that Dickenson, without consent, warning or provocation,
  864. pushed and assualted her and tore the top of her bathing suit.
  865.    Dickenson "willfully, wantonly and shamelessly" exposed her to the crowd
  866. attending the concert, the suit contends, thereby holding her up to "scorn,
  867. shame and extremem embarrassment" and seriously damaging her "personal and
  868. professional reputation."
  869.    Ms. Kolaga wore a one-piece bathing suit with a plunging neck-line, thigh-
  870. high leather boots and leather gloves, with a chain and handcuffs dangling
  871. from a leather belt.
  872.    Mr. Lieberman said she has asked not to talk to reporters because she is
  873. "still mildly hysterical" over the incident.  Mr. Lieberman said she is only
  874. working part-time because she is still upset."

  1486. * The name IRON MAIDEN was gotten from the movie "The Man In The Iron Mask."
  1487. * The nickname "Bruce Bruce" (used during Bruce's days in Samson) 
  1488.   is originally from Monty Python's "no pooftas" sketch.
  1489. * The nickname "Air Raid Siren" was actually well-earned in Samson when he 
  1490.   managed to shatter a huge glass globe at Chelsea College with one 
  1491.   particularly well-placed scream).
  1492. * "Where Eagles Dare", underlying theme:  Whatever is going on wrong in the
  1493.   world, Clint Eastwood will fix it (quote by Bruce Dickinson, Hannover,
  1494.   Germany, 4/15/93).  Also taken from the movie of the same name, with Clint
  1495.   Eastwood and Richard Burton.  The book is by Alistair MacLean.  There's
  1496.   also a part in here that supposed to sound like a machine gun (an instru-
  1497.   mental section), but it's not very loud in the mix.  This song was done in
  1498.   only 2 takes.  For the Piece Of Mind tour, this used to be the opening
  1499.   song, putting a good bit of pressure on Nicko, since he was still new to
  1500.   the band.
  1501. * The Charlotte series:  "Charlotte The Harlot" (from IRON MAIDEN), "22, 
  1502.   Acacia Avenue" (from NUMBER OF THE BEAST). It is argued by some that "Hooks
  1503.   In You" (from NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING), and "From Here To Eternity" (FEAR
  1504.   OF THE DARK) are continuations of the storyline but others disagree.
  1505. * "Run To The Hills" tells the tale of the massacre of the native Americans
  1506.   by the pillaging pale-faces from both points of view.  The first part of
  1507.   the song tells the side of the Indians.  The second part tells the side of
  1508.   the soldiers.  This was the band's first BIG hit single, especially in the
  1509.   states.
  1510. * "The Number Of The Beast" was inspired by the movie "Omen II."  It's about 
  1511.   a dream/nightmare that Steve Harris supposedly had (not devil worship!).  
  1512.   The scream at the end was originally a sort of attempt to get a great 
  1513.   blood-curdling scream at the end like on THE WHO's "You Won't Get Fooled 
  1514.   Again."
  1515. * "Children Of The Damned" is a song inpsired by the movie of the same name.
  1516. * "Murders In The Rue Morgue" is based on Edgar Allen Poe's poem "Murder In
  1517.   The Rue Morgue."
  1518. * "Bring Your Daughter...To The Slaughter" is loosely based on the poem "To 
  1519.   Coy His Mistress."
  1520. * "The Sheriff Of Huddersfield" (b-side "Wasted Years" single) is a song
  1521.   about Maiden's manager Rod (Smallwallet) Smallwood.  He is notoriously a
  1522.   cheapskate, skimping tips wherever possible, and pinching pennies
  1523.   wherever.  Just listen to the song!
  1524. * "Still Life" is about a guy who's drawn like a magnet to a pool of water,
  1525.   sees his face in the lake, has nightmares about it, and in the end jumps in
  1526.   and takes his unfortunate girlfriend with him.  I think it is inspired by
  1527.   Ramsey Campbell's "The Inhabitant of The Lake."  (This one's from an old
  1528.   posting in alt.rock-n-roll.metal).
  1529. * "Quest For Fire", inspired by the movie of the same name, is a little less
  1530.   convincing than some of the other epics, although the vision it conjures up
  1531.   of dinosaurs and Racquel Welch wobbling about is pretty agreeable.
  1532. * "Sun And Steel" is a song about Miyamoto Musashi, a legendary Japanese
  1533.   Swordsman.  The lyrics make many references to Musashi's book "A Book Of
  1534.   Five Rings."  Musashi's first fight was at the age of 13, where he
  1535.   (untrained) supposedly beat his opponent, a samurai warrior, to death
  1536.   with a stick.  At the age of 16 he had his second fight, and he killed
  1537.   that guy, too.  The line "Through Earth and Water, Fire and Wind, you
  1538.   came at last, Nothing was the end" is a reference to "A Book Of Five
  1539.   Rings."  Musashi also wrote his book in five sections (books):  Earth,
  1540.   Water, Fire, Wind, and Void.  "You make your cut by Fire and Stones, take
  1541.   you and your blade, break you both in two".  The Fire and Stones cut is a
  1542.   movement that Musashi decribes in the aforementioned book.  Also, according
  1543.   to the book "Kenjutsu: The Japanese Art of Swordsmanship" by Charles
  1544.   Daniel, Musashi died of natural causes at the age of 61.
  1545. * "To Tame A Land" is based on the novel "Dune" by Frank Herbert.  The song
  1546.   was actually originally titled "Dune," and Steve wanted to use a spoken
  1547.   quotation from the book as the intro.  Out of courtesy they applied to
  1548.   Herbert's agent for permission, and back the word came from Herbert:  "No.
  1549.   Because Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock
  1550.   bands, and especially rock bands like IRON MAIDEN."  Pretty narrow-minded
  1551.   attitude if you ask me.  Even though the band thought it would be a good
  1552.   advertisement for the book "Dune" and everything, Frank Herbert still said
  1553.   no, and that *if* IRON MAIDEN went through with it, then he'd sue them into
  1554.   next week, etc.  Bastard!  :)
  1555. * "Purgatory" is an old song, and in a slightly different form used to be
  1556.   called "Floating".  Then Maiden changed the lyrics and a couple of bits in
  1557.   the middle section.
  1558. * "Gangland", written by Clive Burr and Adrian Smith, is a bit jazz
  1559.   influenced, with the drum intro written by Clive (of course).
  1560. * "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is about someone with only a few hours left to live.
  1561.   He is about to be hanged, and this deals with how he faces his future.
  1562. * "The Trooper" is based on the Crimean War with the British against the
  1563.   Russians.  The opening is meant to try and recreate the galloping horses in
  1564.   the charge of the light brigade.  Based on Lord Alfred Tennyson's "Charge 
  1565.   Of The Light Brigade."
  1566. * "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner", as many people know, is an epic (Maiden's
  1567.   longest song by far, clocking in at 13:45), based on the poem of the same
  1568.   name written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (required reading in many high
  1569.   school literature classes that I know of!)  The song is much easier to
  1570.   understand than the actual poem, if you ask me!  :)
  1571. * "Invaders" (from THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST) is actually an extension of the 
  1572.   old standard song "Invasion" (heard on The Soundhouse Tapes, and as a
  1573.   b-side to the Women In Uniform single). It is about the Viking invasion(s)
  1574.   of England.
  1575. * "King of Twilight" - a cover song (the b-side on the Aces High single) 
  1576.   originally done by NEKTAR, from the album "A Tab In The Ocean."  Other 
  1577.   NEKTAR albums are:  "Remember The Future", "Down To Earth", "Recycled", and
  1578.   "Magic Is A Child."
  1579. * "Genghis Khan" is an instrumental about what Genghis Khan's advancing army
  1580.   was like.
  1581. * "The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner" has taken its title from

  1604.   starring Patrick McGoohan.  This series has become kind of a cult and you
  1605.   can buy the whole set on video.  In the series, a British secret agent

  1607.   up in a place called "The Village" where people have their names replaced by
  1608.   numbers.  He is number Six and the numbers get smaller as you go up the

  1677.   Devil sends the beast with wrath, beacause he knows the time is short...Let 
  1678.   him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast for it is a human
  1679.   number, its number is Six hundred and sixty six."  The person speaking this
  1680.   intro is NOT Vincent Price...it's actually a spaker found by an ad agent
  1681.   friend of Rod Smallwood's).  [Actually, the proper quote from the Book of
  1682.   Revelations is "... its number is six hundred and three score six."]
  1683. * "The Prisoner" was a song inspired by the sixties acid-tab TV series of the
  1684.   same name and open with a phrase from the series.  The phrase "I'm not a
  1685.   number, I'm a free man!" sums up the spirit of the central rebel character

  1814. subsidiary of EMI).  Epic Records also distributes some titles under license
  1815. from Capitol.  This needs to be clarified somewhat as well.  Can anyone
  1816. help?!

  1828. The new singer with IRON MAIDEN is Blaze Bayley (not Bailey!), formerly
  1829. of WOLFSBANE.  Rod Smallwood says about this decision:

  1831.  "It wasn't a difficult choice to make when it came down to it, but there
  1832.  was a lot of people to look at. The band finally all sat down at the end
  1833.  of August and listened to the hundreds of tapes and from there we got down
  1834.  to 16, who were auditioned at Steve's.  They were given six songs to learn,
  1835.  and then they sang those six songs with the band a couple of times and from
  1836.  those 16 there emerged three possible people. We took those three back up to
  1837.  Steve's and took the vocals off some live tapes asked them to sing along in
  1838.  the studio to get an idea of how it sounded on tape and from the basis of
  1839.  those tapes we decided Blaze was the best man for the job"

  1850.  press speculation and everyone's probably read and heard quite enough about

  1856. Who is Osiris/The Powerslave connection?

  1858. The origin of Osiris is obscure but by 2400BC Osiris played a double role:
  1859. He was both a god of fertility and the personification of the dead king.
  1860. This dual role was in turn combined with the Egyptian dogma of divine
  1861. kingship: The king at death became Osiris, god of the underworld; the dead
  1862. king's son, the living king, was identified with Horus, god of the sky.
  1863. Osiris and Horus, therefore, were father and son. The goddess Isis was the
  1864. mother of the king and was thus the mother of Horus and wife of Osiris.
  1865. The god Seth was considered the murderer of Osiris and the adversary of
  1866. Horus.

  1868. According to the most traditional form of the myth, Osiris was slain or
  1869. drowned by Seth, who tore the corpse into 14 pieces and flung them
  1870. over the earth. Eventually Isis and her sister Nephthys found and buried
  1871. all the pieces except the phallus, thereby giving new life to Osiris, who
  1872. thenceforth remained in the underworld as ruler and judge. Horus then
  1873. successfully fought against Seth and became the new king of Egypt.

  1875. Osiris was regarded as not only the ruler of the dead but also as the power
  1876. that granted all life from the underworld, from sprouting vegetables to
  1877. the annual flood of the Nile. From about 2000BC onward it was believed
  1878. that every man, not just the deceased kings, became identified with Osiris
  1879. at death. The process of becoming Osiris, however, did not imply resurrection,
  1880. for even Osiris did not rise from the dead. Instead it was the assumption
  1881. of immortality, both in the next world and through one's descendants on earth.

  1884. Who is Icarus?
  1885. --------------
  1886. In ancient greek mythology, there was once a king of the island of Crete
  1887. called Minos, who received a curse for his kingdom: this curse was a monster,
  1888. half man and half bull and was called the Minotaur.  (I am leaving out the
  1889. why and how this Minotaur was born, but you may find the relevant information
  1890. in a good encyclopedia...it's rather amusing). After a son of Minos was
  1891. killed by the Athenians, to avenge his death, king Minos demanded that seven
  1892. Athenian youths and seven maidens be sent every 9th year to Crete to be
  1893. devoured by the Minotaur. When the third time of the sacrifice came,
  1894. Theseus, son of the king of Athens was chosen to go. Theseus decided to
  1895. take a shot at killing the Minotaur.
  1896.  
  1897. Before Theseus entered the maze, king Minos' daughter, Ariadne, gave him
  1898. a long string rolled into a ball, which Theseus unwound as he proceeded
  1899. through the labyrinth so as to remember his way out. Our hero succeeded
  1900. in slaying the Minotaur and escaped safely.
  1901.  
  1902. The builder of the labyrinth was a famous architect called Daedalus, who
  1903. was being helf captive by king Minos so that he wouldn't divulge the secret
  1904. of the labyrinth. Icarus was the son of Daedalus.
  1905.  
  1906. At some time, Daedalus tried to escape from his prison by constructing
  1907. two sets of wings made with feathers stuck together with wax, one set for
  1908. himself and the other for his son Icarus who was to flee with him.
  1909. Both father and son were able to fly out of Crete, but it happened that
  1910. Icarus was overjoyous and flew too high, getting "very near the sun". The
  1911. heat melted the wax that bound the feathers and he fell into the ocean.

  1914. Why don't SANCTUARY and TWILIGHT ZONE appear
  1915. on the UK/European album pressings?

  1917. "Sanctuary" first appeared on the Metal For Muthas with "Wrathchild."
  1918. This is why neither one made it on the first album. I guess by the time the
  1919. single was issued Tony Parsons was no longer a member of the band so they
  1920. redid it with Dennis. "Wrathchild" was Adrian Smith's audition piece, and I
  1921. guess he must have done such a great job with it that they decided to stick
  1922. that onto the next single. 
  1923.  
  1924. Already "Running Free" was a single, but only in Europe and I think this 
  1925. single was performed by the quartet lineup Di'anno / Murray / Harris / Sampson,
  1926. which would make sense that "Sanctuary" would be the first thing done by the
  1927. lineup that would appear on the album, but since by now there were two versions
  1928. of "Sanctuary floating about in UK but never heard in USA, they stick on the
  1929. new version of "Sanctuary" which has the same lineup as the rest of the album
  1930. (in my opinion though it's the inferior version. Stratton's solos tended to
  1931. sound more or less the same from song to song). 
  1932.  
  1933. "Twilight Zone" comes out as a single soon after Adrian joins, but again only
  1934. in the UK but not in USA. This is why it appears on USA pressings of Killers
  1935. but not in the UK and everywhere else, I guess.
  1936. Again, it makes sense to stick it on this album because the lineup that did
  1937. "Twilight Zone" is the same that did the second LP.

  1945. * When the group went down to Nassau, Bahamas in early 1983, they earned some
  1946.   nicknames.  H was Melvin (the name for his alter-ego, basically whenever he
  1947.   was *drunk*!), Dave was Nobby, Nicko was Boomer (because of his really foul
  1948.   farts), Bruce was Conan The Librarian.
  1949. * Also in Nassau, the boys almost ran out of money.  Credit cards were full,
  1950.   and no cash on hand, and taking forever to cable money over from England.
  1951.   So they put their faith in manager Rod Smallwood, and he walked down to
  1952.   the casino with $50, and came back with $300, 6 nights in a row.  :)
  1953. * The drum intro to Where Eagles Dare is another interesting story.  This was
  1954.   done right after Nicko entered the band in Dec '82/Jan '83, and when they
  1955.   had begun recording Piece Of Mind.  Steve Harris mentioned to Nicko that
  1956.   they needed some kind of drum intro.  Nicko was still kind of nervous, 
  1957.   etc., but he stayed in working almost all day on a drum intro for Where
  1958.   Eagles Dare.  At the end of the day, he had a little 6-7 second thing,
  1959.   that entailed hitting basically every piece of his drum kit, going from
  1960.   small tom to big tom, like a kind of ending to a song - and then jumped
  1961.   into the chorus.  The next day, Nicko played it for Steve and Steve said
  1962.   "no...no...no...nothing like that...just something simple like rat-tat-
  1963.   tat-tat....rat-tat-tat-tat (you get the idea)".  (Steve apparently tried
  1964.   to play something on Nicko's kit, but he's about as good as that as his
  1965.   grandmother would be...)  Nicko said "oh...you mean like this?" and played 
  1966.   it.  "That's it!" replied Steve.  What you hear on the LP is what it was
  1967.   in the end.
  1968. * After a concert on October 13, 1979 at the Umist in Manchester, England,
  1969.   Dave Murray apparently hit on (or did something to!) enough girls, and
  1970.   pissed off enough boyfriends/guys, etc., that the next week there was
  1971.   actually an article in SOUNDS magazine threatening to kick his ass!  The
  1972.   article read:
  1973.      "I would just like to warn Dave Murray the lead guitarist of Iron Maiden
  1974.   that if he steps foot inside Manchester again I will personally pummell his
  1975.   brains in, cos he's ruined what I thought was an ace relationship with my
  1976.   girlfriend.  And may I point out that no matter how much she rubs his name
  1977.   in my face I still think Deb Brown of Wythenshawe is the best yet.

  1987. * Steve's first bass was a copy Fender Telecaster.  It cost him 40 pounds.
  1988. * Steve actually studied to be an architectural draftsman for about 5 years
  1989.   or so, and actually received a license.
  1990. * Steve Harris is the band's main songwriter, having written or co-written
  1991.   approximately 75% of all songs.  I first discovered this fact when I used
  1992.   to watch the LIVE AFTER DEATH video and see Steve Harris mouth along to all
  1993.   the lyrics while playing bass!  Now I understand why!  :)
  1994. * Steve believed the best song he had written was "Phantom Of The Opera",
  1995.   then changed to "To Tame A Land", then changed to "Rime Of The Ancient
  1996.   Mariner" (as of 1985).  Anybody know if that's changed again since?
  1997. * Steve Harris also thinks the best Maiden song that Adrian Smith wrote was
  1998.   "2 Minutes To Midnight."
  1999. * Dave Murray writes a song about once every 3 years, a process that Bruce
  2000.   Dickinson has described as being something like "trying to give birth to
  2001.   an elephant!"  Some songs are "Charlotte The Harlot".  Also, "The 
  2002.   Prophecy", "Still Life", "Deja-Vu", "Public Enema Number One", "Fates
  2003.   Warning", "Chains Of Misery", "Judas Be My Guide", and "Twilight Zone" 
  2004.   (the main riffs but not the lyrics, which were written mainly of course by 
  2005.   Steve Harris).
  2006. * The MAIDEN JAPAN E.P. happened because the Japanese wanted a live product.
  2007.   It was produced by IRON MAIDEN and Doug Hall, and released in November of
  2008.   1981.
  2009. * IRON MAIDEN is apparently included in the Guiness Book Of World Records
  2010.   Museum in Las Vegas, NV.  The highest decibel level ever at a rock concert
  2011.   on record is credited to them at the performance a few years back at Castle
  2012.   Donington for the Monsters Of Rock Festival (the 8/20/88 show, I believe).
  2013.   I couldn't find any evidence of this is the actual book, or when I went to
  2014.   another museum myself.  Any confirmations?
  2015. * Nicko McBrain used to play with Pat Travers, but doesn't think too highly
  2016.   of him or the experience.  When asked about it in 1988, Nicko replied "I 
  2017.   wouldn't stop to PISS on him!"
  2018. * Nicko McBrain has (at least) 1 kid, Nicko Junior I believe.  He was born
  2019.   sometime around 1982 or so.  Nicko also married an American woman sometime
  2020.   in 1988 I think.  I'm not sure what number marriage this was, and if he's
  2021.   still married or not...
  2022. * The video for The Trooper contains a vicious cavalry charge which the BBC
  2023.   wouldn't play un-edited (even though the film it was lifted from, "Die With
  2024.   Your Boots On" (do I see trend here?!) was ironically screened at 7pm one
  2025.   evening when the band had been told their video was 'too bloodthirsty for
  2026.   young people').
  2027. * Most concerts during the Piece Of Mind tour clocked it at a little over 2 
  2028.   hours (for the first time now at this point)!
  2029. * Bruce is an avid fencer, and carries a full set of epees on the road with
  2030.   him.
  2031. * Bruce is also a 'train addict' - fascinated by trains, etc.
  2032. * Adrian is an avid fly fisherman.
  2033. * It's hard for Nicko to even take a break from playing (even after months
  2034.   and months and months on the road) - he likes playing so much!  Even so,
  2035.   he is also an avid fisherman, and has pursued and obtained a private
  2036.   pilot's license.  During the last part of the World Slavery Tour, he
  2037.   preferred flying his private plane to most gigs, as opposed to the guy's
  2038.   tour bus.
  2039. * The whole band are huge soccer fans.  West Ham (England) is their favorite
  2040.   team, but they used to play often on the road, especially gruelling matches
  2041.   with Rainbow and Def Leppard guys.  You can also see references to West Ham
  2042.   on the SOMEWHERE IN TIME album cover, and even a reference or two in a few
  2043.   different songs.
  2044. * POWERSLAVE was mixed at famed Electric Ladyland Studios in New York, NY.
  2045. * Rehearsals for the World Slavery Tour were done in Fort Lauderdale, FL,
  2046.   beginning 06/20/84.  This was followed in early August by 5 days of pre-
  2047.   production in Hannover, Germany, where the whole stage set, P.A., lights,
  2048.   etc. were put together complete for the first time.
  2049. * The World Slavery Tour entailed over 300 gigs in 13 months, enslaving 28
  2050.   countries en route.  On this tour they took 120,000 watts of PA, and over
  2051.   800 lamps.  For the US, it took 6 45-foot trailers and 5 buses to carry all
  2052.   the equipment and crew and personnel (the permanent crew of 12 people 
  2053.   expanding to 42 on the road).
  2054. * Maiden has always tried to avoid playing big prestige arenas, like Wembley
  2055.   and the NEC (both in England) in favor of taking the music to the people
  2056.   for as many nights as the people want them there.  Well, at least most of
  2057.   the time.  :)
  2058. * Steve Harris lives on a farm in Romford, just outside of Essex, England.

  2068. * The CD releases of the first 2 albums, IRON MAIDEN and KILLERS, were not
  2069.   originally available when CDs first came to be.  They were released later
  2070.   on, and subsequently don't have a full inner sleeve, like all current CDs.

  2073. * Martin Birch has produced all of Maiden's albums, except IRON MAIDEN 
  2074.   (produced by Will Malone), and A REAL LIVE ONE and A REAL DEAD ONE

  2076. * The show for the Monsters Of Rock Festival, August 22, 1992, was about a
  2077.   2 hour Maiden gig.  On the very last song of the show, "Running Free", 
  2078.   Adrian Smith comes out there to play on it!  Bruce said later on that he 
  2079.   "didn't miss a note" and they saw tears in his eyes.
  2080. * The auditions for guitarists in Maiden's history has differed greatly.
  2081.   When Adrian Smith tried out, all he had to do was apparently play the song
  2082.   "Wrathchild", down a pint of beer in like 5 seconds, and play soccer halfway
  2083.   decent with the guys.  Janick Gers' audition was more difficult:  he had to
  2084.   learn "Iron Maiden", "Children Of The Damned", and "The Trooper" in one
  2085.   night!  You gotta think though...both of these guys were good friends with
  2086.   the band and had some kind of connections to IRON MAIDEN even before they
  2087.   joined.
  2088. * Bruce Dickinson was required to learn 5 songs for his audition.  He
  2089.   apparently also went above and beyond the call of duty and learned like 10
  2090.   or something.
  2091. * Paul Sears (ex-GYPSY'S KISS drummer, an old band with Steve Harris) took
  2092.   over IRON MAIDEN's management temporarily for a short time in 1977.
  2093. * One of IRON MAIDEN's earliest fans was Keith Wilfort, now the head of the
  2094.   official IRON MAIDEN Fan Club.  He caught Maiden's first ever performance
  2095.   at the Cart & Horses tavern by accident - he was giving a barmaid's boy-
  2096.   friend the slip at the time after getting caught taking her out, and came
  2097.   in.  He was completely blown away by "Transylvania" and was converted on
  2098.   the spot.  One night Keith walked into the Bridge House (another popular
  2099.   early gigging spot) with a home-made t-shirt proudly proclaiming "Charlotte
  2100.   Rules OK", and soon followed it with a more elaborate "Invasion" t-shirt.
  2101.   So, he is pretty much the inventor of the first IRON MAIDEN t-shirt.  He
  2102.   later 'graduated' to pushing the band's merchandise, turning his home into
  2103.   a pit with thousands of copies of THE SOUNDHOUSE TAPES E.P., and has since
  2104.   progressed onto the Fan Club.
  2105. * All the b-sides for the SOMEWHERE IN TIME album were played pretty much
  2106.   totally by Adrian Smith.  Nicko did drums, Bruce did some vocals, but
  2107.   everything else was done by Adrian...some vocals ("Reach Out", for
  2108.   instance), all guitar and bass (that's why you don't hear the Steve Harris-
  2109.   esque dink-dink-dink all the way through on the bass line).  In fact, it
  2110.   was supposedly only these 3 guys in the studio the whole time for these
  2111.   singles:  "Reach Out", "That Girl", and "Juanita."  "Sheriff Of
  2112.   Huddersfield" was done by the whole band, by the way.
  2113. * Think about this:  the first 6 studio albums were in alphabetical order by
  2114.   chance:  IRON MAIDEN, KILLERS, (THE) NUMBER OF THE BEAST, PIECE OF MIND,
  2115.   POWERSLAVE, and SOMEWHERE IN TIME.  Then the go in reverse order after
  2116.   that:  SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON, NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING, and FEAR OF
  2117.   THE DARK.
  2118. * Here's something else interesting:  with the exception of the FROM THERE TO
  2119.   ETERNITY video (which was released sometime in 1992), IRON MAIDEN has
  2120.   released a video about every 2 years since their first, LIVE AT THE RAINBOW,
  2121.   in 1981.
  2122. * All proceeds from the sale of the official IRON MAIDEN biography "Running
  2123.   Free" are donated to the Anti-Heroin campaign (as well as sales from the

  2134.   Steve's bass - it's got West Ham logo on it.  The club uses 'Up the Irons'
  2135.   as its 'motto' and that is why Maiden uses it as well.  Besides they are

  2255. incorrect lyrics unfortunately...Really screwed up!  All other books are for
  2256. the most part VERY accurate and complete, with the exception of the very
  2257. first book, which includes the first 4 albums (damn!):  this book only gives
  2258. a moderately-okay transcription of main rhythms, but starts to get worse for
  2259. bridges and complex riffs, and contains virtually nothing on solos.  The
  2260. "Powerslave/Somewhere In Time" book is probably the best (IMHO) - very
  2261. accurate and readable, and done by Wolf Marshall. "The best of IRON MAIDEN"
  2262. is good value for money as long as you're prepared to work quite hard
  2263. correcting some of the transcriptions.
